Leaving historic Bath and driving mainly north through rural farmlands you will come to the historic town of Edenton. Like Bath, Edenton is full of historic charm and is truly one of the prettiest towns in North Carolina. This small, vibrant, waterfront community is definitely worth a visit. Edenton was founded in the late 17th century and retains a well persevered collection of 18th, 19th, and early-20th-century buildings. We’re exploring why Edenton is worth a day trip from Bath, NC. 

Where is Edenton,NC?  

63 miles from Bath, Edenton is located on Edenton Bay at the head of the Albemarle Sound.The town comprises approximately 5,000 people. Driving into Edenton as you enter downtown you get the feeling of stepping back in time to a simpler life. Sidewalk benches call your name to sit a spell and visit with friendly folks. Take a stroll down Broad St and discover quaint restaurants and unique shops which you will surely want to explore and experience. 

Historic Edenton 

Like Bath, Edenton is steeped in history. As Bath is the first town in North Carolina, Edenton is known as the second oldest town in the state. Both towns played an important role in North Carolina’s history.

Incorporated in 1722, Edenton was home to Penelope Barker,organizer of the 1774 “Edenton Tea Party.” She and 51other brave women signed the ‘Declaration of Protest” opposing the British Tea Act. This was America’s first political action by women.

Edenton is also home to the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse where Revolutionary patriots, Judges James Iredell and Samuel Johnston heard cases here.The state supreme court still holds sessions in this courthouse. It is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the southern United States. Edenton has other interesting historic places to see, a few more to check out during your visit include:

• 250 Year Old Cupola House – Built in 1758 for Frances Corbin, an agent for Lord Granville, one of eight Lord Proprietors, the Cupola House is an architectural treasure that illustrates the styles and craftsmanship of the mid-17th century.
• Roanoke River Lighthouse – Built in 1886, the beautifully restored lighthouse now sits proudly in Edenton’s harbor. It’s believed to be the last lighthouse in the US made from a square frame building built for a screw-pile base.
• Maritime Underground Railroad site – Visit Waterfront Park to learn how Edenton played a role in the Underground Railroad Network. The Maritime Underground Railroad was a network of African-American watermen that arranged passage, by vessel, for enslaved African-Americans seeking freedom. In her book “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” Edenton resident Harriet Jacobs describes her escape from slavery in 1842.
• St. Paul’s Episcopal Church – Bath,NC is home to the oldest church in the    state, St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Edenton is home to the second-oldest church building in North Carolina. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church  began in 1736. Three Colonial-era governors are buried in the churchyard of St. Pauls. When walking around town the beautiful grounds of St. Pauls with their ancient trees provide a perfect place to sit, read or reflect. 

Things to do In Edenton

Not only does Edenton offer a rich history to explore, its ideal proximity to the Albemarle Sound makes it a destination for water activities. Sailing, kayaking and fishing are all great options in Edenton. If you are sailing or boating to Edenton the Town Harbor offers boat slips with electric hookups. If you are interested in paddling, kayaks and canoes are available to rent.

And of course we can’t forget the shopping and dining. Edendon has an active art scene. Check out the Chowan Arts Council Gallery Shop on Water Street for unique works by local and regional artists. While enjoying a coffee at Edenton Coffee House a friendly local suggested we must visit Byrum Hardware, the local hardware store that has just about anything you need. They were not wrong, definitely worth a visit.
